We founded the Progress Action Fund in August 2020 to solely focus on Georgia.
On November 3, we secured victory for Carolyn Bourdeaux and Rep. Lucy McBath, Vice President Biden & Senator Harris, and pushed Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff into Senate runoffs. On January 5th, we supported both Senate candidates to victory, giving Democrats control of the Senate.
We focused on Georgia because the state was a case study of how liberal Democrats in red to blue races receive less support. In August 2020, Democratic groups were being outspent 4.5:1 by Republican groups in Ossoff’s race. To support Ossoff, we ran 3 million Facebook ads holding Senator Perdue accountable to 626,000 Georgians. Ossoff lost by less than 2 points and forced a runoff. Had Democratic groups allocated a fraction of the $330 million they spent on Senate losses in Iowa, Maine, Montana, and North Carolina to Ossoff, the data suggests he would have won outright on Nov. 3.
To support Ossoff and Raphael Warnock for the January runoffs, we ran an ad exposing Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue for investing in a company that makes body bags after receiving classified COVID-19 intel. Our ad went viral with 1 million views in the first 24 hours and received coverage from outlets such as The Intercept and Hill Reporter. 577,000 Georgians saw the digital ad a total of 6.31 million times. Thanks in part to our work, Ossoff and Warnock won, giving Democrats Senate control and a chance for our country to make real change.
